How Often Should You Test Your Pool Water?

The short answer is at least once a week. But depending on where you live and how you use your pool, you might need to test more often. Here's a realistic schedule.

Weekly Testing (Minimum)

Every pool, regardless of location or type, should be tested at least once per week during swimming season. The five readings to check are free chlorine, total chlorine (or combined chlorine), pH, total alkalinity, and cyanuric acid. Calcium hardness can be checked monthly since it changes slowly.

Twice a Week in Hot Climates

If you're in Florida, Texas, Arizona, or anywhere with consistent temperatures above 85 degrees Fahrenheit, test 2-3 times per week. Heat speeds up chlorine consumption, increases algae growth, and makes pH drift faster. Saltwater pools in hot climates are especially prone to rapid pH rise.

Always Test After These Events

Heavy rain dilutes your chemicals and can change pH and alkalinity significantly. A pool party with lots of swimmers adds body oils, sunscreen, and sweat that consume chlorine quickly. After adding any chemicals, wait the recommended time and then retest to verify your levels hit the target. After a strong windstorm, debris introduces contaminants. If you notice the water looks different (cloudy, green tint, foamy), test immediately.

What About Winter?

If you keep your pool open year-round but don't swim in it during winter, you can drop to every 2 weeks. Chlorine consumption drops dramatically in cold water, and algae growth slows. But don't skip it entirely. Neglected winter pools are expensive to recover in spring.

Test Strips vs. Drop Kits

Test strips are fast and convenient for routine checks. They're accurate enough for weekly maintenance. Liquid drop test kits (like the Taylor K-2006) are more precise and better for troubleshooting problems. Many pool owners use strips for routine testing and a drop kit when something seems off or when they want to verify a strip reading.

Track Your Results

Testing without recording is like weighing yourself without remembering the number. Tracking your readings over time reveals patterns, like pH that drifts high every Thursday or chlorine that drops after every weekend. Pool Clarity saves your readings and shows you trends so you can get ahead of problems instead of reacting to them.
